The dough rises until pillowy soft, then bakes to golden perfection. It’s a recipe that’s both simple and rewarding, capturing that perfect balance of sweetness, warmth, and texture that makes every bite feel homemade and heartwarming.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Dough:

  • 2 cups whole milk

  • ½ cup vegetable oil

  • ½ cup granulated sugar

  • 2¼ tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast

  • 4½ cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for kneading)

  • ½ tsp baking powder

  • ½ tsp baking soda

  • 1½ tsp salt

For the Filling:

  • 1 cup melted butter

  • 1 cup brown sugar

  • 2½ tbsp ground cinnamon

For the Frosting:

  • 1 lb powdered sugar

  • ¼ cup whole milk

  • 2 tbsp melted butter

  • ¼ cup brewed coffee (optional for flavor depth)

  • 1 tbsp maple flavoring or pure maple syrup

Instructions

Step 1: Warm the milk mixture

In a large pot, combine milk, vegetable oil, and sugar. Heat until just below a simmer, then remove from heat and let it cool until lukewarm.

Step 2: Activate the yeast

Sprinkle yeast over the warm milk mixture and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes foamy.

Step 3: Add flour to form the dough

Stir in 4 cups of flour until combined. Cover the bowl with a clean towel and let it rest in a warm spot for 1 hour until the dough doubles in size.

Step 4: Add remaining ingredients

Once risen, add baking powder, baking soda, salt, and the remaining ½ cup of flour. Stir until fully incorporated and the dough is soft but not sticky.

Step 5: Roll out the dough

Transfer dough to a floured surface and roll it into a large rectangle about ¼-inch thick.

Step 6: Add the filling

Brush melted butter evenly over the surface of the dough. Sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon, covering the entire rectangle.

Step 7: Roll and cut the rolls

Starting from the long edge, roll the dough tightly into a log. Slice into 1-inch rolls using a sharp knife or dental floss for clean cuts.

Step 8: Arrange and rise again

Place the rolls in a greased baking pan, leaving a little space between them. Cover and let them rise for 20–30 minutes until puffy.

Step 9: Bake the rolls

Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 15–18 minutes, or until golden brown on top but still soft in the center.

Step 10: Make the frosting

Whisk together powdered sugar, milk, melted butter, coffee, and maple flavoring until smooth. Adjust thickness by adding more milk if needed.

Step 11: Frost and serve

Spread the warm frosting over the rolls right after baking so it melts slightly into the swirls. Serve warm for the best texture and flavor.
