Ham balls originated in the Midwest, particularly in Iowa and surrounding states, where leftover ham was often ground and repurposed into hearty meals. The Pioneer Woman’s version follows this tradition with a combination of ground ham and pork, breadcrumbs, and a flavorful glaze. The dish is baked until tender and caramelized, creating a nostalgic comfort food enjoyed by many families for generations.
For the Ham Balls:
Ground ham (1 lb)
Ground pork (1 lb)
Breadcrumbs (1 cup)
Egg (1 large)
Milk (½ cup)
Onion (½ cup, finely diced)
Salt and black pepper (to taste)
For the Glaze:
Tomato soup (1 can, 10.5 oz)
Brown sugar (¾ cup)
Vinegar (2 tbsp)
Dry mustard (1 tsp)
Set oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a baking dish.
In a large bowl, combine ground ham, ground pork, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, onion, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
Roll the mixture into golf ball-sized portions and place in the prepared baking dish.
In a separate bowl, whisk together tomato soup, brown sugar, vinegar, and dry mustard until smooth.
Pour the glaze evenly over the ham balls. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes, then uncover and bake for another 15–20 minutes until caramelized.
Serve warm with mashed potatoes, green beans, or dinner rolls.
