Cheeseburger pie is a retro American dish that gained popularity in the 1970s and 1980s, often appearing in community cookbooks and dinner tables across the Midwest. It was developed as a way to enjoy cheeseburgers without grilling—by baking them in pie form. The Pioneer Woman’s version honors that tradition with a no-fuss recipe using pantry staples and rich, cheesy flavors.
Ground beef (1 lb, lean)
Onion (1 medium, finely chopped)
Garlic (2 cloves, minced)
Salt (½ tsp)
Black pepper (¼ tsp)
Eggs (2 large)
Milk (1 cup)
Bisquick or baking mix (½ cup)
Cheddar cheese (1 ½ cups, shredded)
Mustard (1 tsp, optional for extra flavor)
Ketchup (2 tbsp, optional for topping)
Set oven to 400°F (200°C) and lightly grease a pie dish.
In a skillet, brown ground beef with onion and garlic until beef is cooked through and onions are soft. Drain excess fat. Season with salt and pepper.
Spread the beef mixture evenly in the prepared pie dish. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top.
In a bowl, whisk eggs, milk, and Bisquick baking mix until smooth. Pour this mixture over the beef and cheese layer.
Bake for 25–30 minutes until the top is golden and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
Let cool for 5 minutes, slice into wedges, and serve warm. Optional: drizzle with ketchup or mustard for a true cheeseburger experience.
